Aug 4 - Death Railway over River Kwai
The pictures below are thumbnails, meaning they are small copies of the real thing. You just click them. The weather in Norway and in Bangkok just now.

Time for an 6 hours train ride along this infamous track. The Death Railway build by slave labor and where 100 000 locals died and 17 000 allied POWs.

To the left, Kran is waiting for the taxi to pick us up for a trip to the Kanchanaburi Railwaystation.

The locomotive arrived.

Kran and Martin happily in their seats. Special carriage for tourists. They pay 300 bath each way, locals 100 bath (€ 2,50).

Traveling along the river in this train was fascinating. Just listen to the sound of this rickety train. 45 MB download.

The toilet is traditional Thai style. Heavily used during train stop. Impossible to use during travel.

Kran sticking her head out. Can be dangerous since the bushes are very close to the tracks. Martin lost his beer this way. A tree branch just whisked it away.

An old derelict train left to rust in the tropical heat and humidity.

The locomotive left us and went to the front of the train to pull us back.

Nice track that cost something 1000 lives per kilometer to build.

Another cutting that cost untold number of lives to build. To quote my American friend that spent two years in a Japanese slave camp during WWII: It is a pity with the two atomic bombs we dropped over Japan, they were only 200 too few. Marin concurs.

The next day, Thursday, August 5th, it was time to spend another two days before going to the airport at Bangkok.
