Aug 4 - Death Railway over River Kwai
The pictures below are thumbnails, meaning they are small copies of the real thing. You just click them. The weather in Norway and in Bangkok just now.

Time for an 6 hours train ride along this infamous track. The Death Railway build by slave labor and where 100 000 locals died and 17 000 allied POWs.

To the left, Kran is waiting for the taxi to pick us up for a trip to the Kanchanaburi Railwaystation.

Kran in the back.

In front of the official sign of Kanchanaburi Railwaystation.

Walking towards the end of the station platform.

The local toilet where OK, but not anything else.

The locomotive arrived.

A model of the train along side the track. We crossed the river Kwai on the bridge. Video clip 1 is 21 and the 2nd is 61 MB.

Kran and Martin happily in their seats. Special carriage for tourists. They pay 300 bath each way, locals 100 bath (€ 2,50).

Traveling along the river in this train was fascinating. Just listen to the sound of this rickety train. 45 MB download.

Some muddy fields.

And these fields, Martin doesn't know what is.

But fun it was. Some sights along the track at 21 MB.

Very green bush.

More green fields.

A nice girls selling caps. Martin bought two for friends in Norway and South Africa.

Lovely greenery next to the line.

The toilet is traditional Thai style. Heavily used during train stop. Impossible to use during travel.

A floating house on the river. There were many of them there.

Kran sticking her head out. Can be dangerous since the bushes are very close to the tracks. Martin lost his beer this way. A tree branch just whisked it away.

Cuttings in the mountain side, dug out by hand by allied POWs and their Asian coolies.

A detail of the tracks. Another video clip of 36 MB showing another bridge near the end of the railway.

More greens.

An old derelict train left to rust in the tropical heat and humidity.

The locomotive left us and went to the front of the train to pull us back.

The conductor is very business like.

A temple along the railroad.

Another view of the bridge.

The view towards the end of the train.

A rear view of the track heading back to the Bridge over River Kwai.

Thai army soldier is also taking pictures.

Nice track that cost something 1000 lives per kilometer to build.

An old crappy building.

Krasae Cave next to the railroad.

Another cutting that cost untold number of lives to build. To quote my American friend that spent two years in a Japanese slave camp during WWII: It is a pity with the two atomic bombs we dropped over Japan, they were only 200 too few. Marin concurs.

Kran and Martin at the end of the train.

Another bridge over the river.

A nice temple entrance.

Curved view of the train. Listen to the sound of the train, 24 MB.

Martin pulling faces.

Then we crossed back over the river. See the clip, 101 MB.

The next day, Thursday, August 5th, it was time to spend another two days before going to the airport at Bangkok.
